3 generations died in crash; family awarded $8.7 million
2/21/2006

A northbound tractor-trailer that lost control and crossed into southbound traffic killed three generations of one family. A jury awarded remaining family members $8.7 million in damages.

Heather McNay of Erlanger, her 10-month-old son Evan Embry, and McNays mother Norma J. Young of Covington were killed in a head-on collision on Interstate 75 in Grant County on June 6, 2002. The driver, Kenneth Chandler of Bryan, Ohio, said he passed out after choking on a cup of coffee.

The award is reportedly the second highest ever in the state for this type of case. Judge William O. Bertelsman of the U.S. District Court ruled that Chandler was at fault for the accident and asked the jury to determine the award.
