A Los Angeles County Superior Court jury awarded almost $12 million after being hit by a car in Hollywood crosswalk in 20002. She suffered permanent brain damage.
Alice Mowatt, then a 19-year-old British student visiting the United States, was hit by a sport utility vehicle as she tried to cross busy Cahuenga Boulevard at night. As a result of the accident, Mowatt suffered a loss of some memory, some cognitive function and her senses of taste and smell.
A Los Angeles County Superior Court jury found that the city of Los Angeles had jurisdiction over the crosswalk and that the city had known the crosswalk was dangerous and should have done something to fix it.
