Court allows $50 million award vs Philip Morris for 57-year-old smoker's death
3/22/2006
A court allowed a $50 million punitive damages award against Altria Group Inc's Philip Morris unit in the case of longtime smoker, Richard Boeken, who was diagnosed with lung cancer and then died.
The original verdict of $3 billion in punitive damages was appealed by Phillip Morris and reduced to $100 million. It was then appealed again and reduced to $50 million.
Both Philip Morris and Boeken's widow appealed the final verdict. However, the Supreme Court rejected both appeals without any comment or recorded dissent.
