Texas jury returns $160 million verdict for nursing home beating
3/3/2006
The family of a man brutally beaten in a nursing home won millions of dollars from a lawsuit filed against the home.
Tranquilino Mendoza, 81, was bruised and his face swollen after his roommate beat him at the Comanche Trails Nursing Center, said his daughter, Rosie Paradez. She also said the administrator of the home stood between her and her sister, saying her father only had a scratch.
Summit Care Texas, L.P, owner of Comanche Trails, placed a psychiatric patient in a room with Mendoza for an extra $65 a day. The patient beat Mendoza with a filled water pitcher. A judge awarded the Mendoza family more than $160 million for their pain and suffering. Mendoza died in 1999.
